The CSMTA was incorporated in 1987 to serve the Canadian athletic Community as a national and professional not-for-profit organization. Members work at the grassroots level with local teams and events as well as at the national and international level with Olympic and professional athletes. One of the most important aspects of CSMTA is to educate athletes, coaches, and parents at all levels about the benefits of sport massage.
The Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association (CSMTA) provides leadership in the field of sport massage therapy and education through the establishment of professional standards and qualifications of its members as a certifying body in Canada.
The CSMTA mission is to “Keeping athletes in good hands”. The CSMTA enhances the health care needs of Canadian athletes through its National Sport Massage Certification Program (NSMCP©) and the effective application of sport massage during all phases of their training, performance and competition. The CSMTA promotes a professional climate for the growth of sport massage therapy in Canada.
The CSMTA is devoted to providing sport massage therapy to athletes, giving them an advantage in their game and career. The certified sport massage therapist, SMT (C) must first fulfilled the academic and professional requirements in their respective provinces and then complete the CSMTA post-graduate sport massage training through the NSMCP©. Furthermore, certified sport massage therapists are required to maintain their certification status and participate annually in continuing education courses.
At events and during training, certified sport massage therapists help in the athlete's warm-up, cool-down and flexibility protocol. They also provide clinical assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions by using various sport massage and other related techniques and modalities (ie: hydrotherapy, remedial exercise) for soft tissue manipulation and joint range of motion. In cooperation with the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and other Franchise Holders (FHs), the CSMTA provides services to the National Sport Organizations for provincial and national teams, individual athletes, and for the Canadian Health Care Team at international competitions and Major Games.
