The dust has settled from another amazing Summer Olympic Games.
The world watched as humans competed to be crowned the fastest and the strongest on the planet.
Our very own Marcus Blumensaat was selected as a member of Rowing Canada’s Integrated Support Team (IST) in the role of massage therapist.
It was Marcus’ second games after working with Diving Canada in the 2008 games in Beijing.
For the sport of Rowing the Olympics is the penultimate event with countries focusing 4 years of training towards this one regatta. In London the event was being held at the Eton-Dorney rowing course on the Thames River.
The Canadian team was composed of a the following boats: Women’s Eight, Women’s Lightweight Double, Men’s Eight, Men’s Four, Men’s Pair, Men’s Double and Men’s Lightweight Double. The regatta had a charged atmosphere as the crowd proved to be one of the most electric and enthusiastic in rowing history.
From top to bottom the Canadian team gave everything they had in their pursuit of the podium. As always with sport there were many ups and also downs. At the conclusion of the Olympic regatta Canada walked away with a silver in both the women’s and men’s eights! Though there were other Canadian boats with goals of wearing a medal around their necks they can stand tall as they made our country proud with their work ethic, sacrifice and dedication.
Whether an athlete wins a medal, doesn’t qualify for the Olympic finals or was the last athlete cut from the team they are each champions in my books. I have had the pleasure of working with these amazing human beings on a daily basis over a span of years and thus have watched their professionalism and work ethic first hand.
They wake up and spend every moment of their day trying to be the best in the world at what they do until they collapse back into bed. Not many of us can claim that.
They are people that I would love my kids to idolize and emulate. I am grateful to be surrounded by such people and love sharing in the highs and lows that come with that commitment to excellence.
As in Beijing, it was so amazing to be a part of such a positive, inclusive, peaceful and fun event in London.
Bring on Rio!
