CSMTA at 2016 CASEM Conference
CASEM ( Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine) for the first time held their conference in Victoria, BC this past week. Since CASEMs incorporation in 1970, the Victoria conference broke records as their most attended conference! An organization of physicians committed to to excellence in the practice of medicine as it applies to all aspects of physical activity gathered to hear the latest sport medicine research and participate in workshops from May 18-21.
The CSMTA for the first time participated as an exhibitor during this conference. Trish Schiedel (President), Kim Mark-Goldsworthy (Past president) and Brandy Osborne (BC Chapter Rep) represented the CSMTA at their booth. The week gave us the opportunity to converse with other exhibitors such as Sport Physio and CATA (Canadian Athletic Therapists Association) as well as many sport medicine physicians from across Canada.
This was an excellent opportunity to educate these medical professionals about all aspects of the CSMTA. We were kept busy during the week answering many, many questions such as, 'how do you become a sport massage therapist?'; 'are you regulated?' and the most asked question was 'How do I find a sport massage therapist?'.
We were pleased to be able to show many physicians our website and how to find a therapist from there. There are still many physicians that we encountered over the week who did not know who we were and that a specialized sport group of massage therapists existed. All were impressed to learn about our certification process.
Yours in sport!
