COURSE CONTENT
• Pre, inter, and post-event massage-
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
This course is ideal for massage therapists who would like to improve their knowledge and skills of working with athletes in any environment. It will provide participants with sport massage theory and practical techniques that can be utilized at sporting events, with athletic teams, or in their own clinical setting. The knowledge and practical experience that participants will gain would be of great benefit to anyone working with athletes at any level, including those who will be working with athletes at any Major Games or Olympic Games.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The participants will gain:
• An appreciation for the value of sport massage and its similarities or differences to classical massage
• A competency in several basic massage techniques: Compression, cross- fiber massage, jostling, effleurage, and petrissage
• A competency in the theory and techniques of pre-event, post-event, and inter-event sport massage
• An effective protocol when covering athletic events.
• An understanding of the specific indications and contraindications for a variety of sport massage circumstances
• An understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of sport massage
• The ability to provide the athlete with an excellent quality of massage theory and techniques.
• Event coverage protocol

COURSE INSTRUCTORS
Monty Churchman, Sport Fellow
Monty has been a Registered Massage Therapist since 1996 and is a CSMTA (SF) as well as a High Performance Practitioner with Sport Scientist Canada (HPC). He is proud to be a member of both the MTAS (Massage Therapists Association of Saskatchewan) and the CSMTA (Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association). Currently he practices in Saskatoon SK. Monty has served on the Education and Exam committees, as well as being a current Provincial Board examiner with MTAS. He has also served as the CSMTA National Secretary from 2011-2015 and as Vice President, Ethics and Mentorship Chair from 2016-2022. He also teaches the CSMTA Advanced Sport Massage weekend course as well as the Self massage and the Athlete sessions on behalf of the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. Monty works with all levels of athletes and over the years has had the privilege to work with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders (1999-2002) as well as organizing and implementing massage therapy at Rider training camps (2013-2018), the University of Saskatchewan Women’s volleyball team (2006-2008) and is currently the sport therapist for the U of S Women’s Basketball team (2009-2022). He has also been part of the Integrated Support Team (IST) for the Canadian National Paralympic Swim Team (2015-present). This has seen him work many performance prep camps and World Championships across North America Europe, and the U.K. 2023 saw him selected to the Core Medical Team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. In his spare time, you’ll find him enjoying softball, hockey, golf, or spending time at the family cottage living lake life at its finest.
Al Bodnarchuk, Sport Fellow
Al has been a massage therapist for over 30 years. He has been selected to work at many major games such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and many World Athletics Championships. Al enjoys working with the general public and athletes from the grassroots weekend warrior up to high performance athletes. Al is a member of Massage Therapist Association of Saskatchewan (MTAS) and is a consultant with the Sports Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan. He is also a member of the Huskie Sports Medicine Coalition and has been an IST member with Athletics Canada for over 30 years. Educating clients how to look after themselves with Self Massage is something Al tries to encourage.
